Tavče Gravče is a traditional
Macedonian dish made with baked beans, known for its rich, hearty flavors.
Here’s how to prepare it:
Ingredients
500g
(2 cups) white beans (such as cannellini or butter beans)
1
large onion, finely chopped
2
cloves garlic, minced
1
red bell pepper, chopped
1
dried red chilli (optional)
2
tablespoons vegetable oil
1
teaspoon paprika (sweet or smoked)
1
teaspoon ground black pepper
1
teaspoon salt (or to taste)
1
teaspoon dried mint (optional)
1
teaspoon flour (optional, for thickening)
1
bay leaf
1
teaspoon ground red pepper (optional for spice)
1 tablespoon chopped parsley (for garnish)
Instructions
Prepare
the Beans
Rinse
the beans and soak them overnight in cold water.
Drain
and rinse, then place them in a pot with fresh water and a bay leaf.
Boil
for about 45–60 minutes or until tender, then drain.
Prepare
the Sauce
Heat
oils in a pan over medium heat and sauté the onions until soft and translucent.
Add
garlic and red bell pepper, cooking for another 3 minutes.
Stir
in the paprika, black pepper, and flour (if using) and mix well.
Combine
Everything
Preheat
the oven to 180°C (350°F).
In
a clay pot (or an ovenproof dish), mix the cooked beans with the sautéed
mixture.
Season
with salt, dried mint, and red pepper if using.
Bake
Pour
in a little water or vegetable broth to keep the beans moist.
Bake
uncovered for about 30 minutes until a golden crust forms on top.
Serve
Garnish with chopped parsley and serve warm with bread or a fresh salad.
