Tavče Gravče Traditional Macedonian Dish Made With Baked Beans

Tavče Gravče is a traditional Macedonian dish made with baked beans, known for its rich, hearty flavors. Here’s how to prepare it:

Ingredients

500g (2 cups) white beans (such as cannellini or butter beans)

1 large onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 red bell pepper, chopped

1 dried red chilli (optional)

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

1 teaspoon paprika (sweet or smoked)

1 teaspoon ground black pepper

1 teaspoon salt (or to taste)

1 teaspoon dried mint (optional)

1 teaspoon flour (optional, for thickening)

1 bay leaf

1 teaspoon ground red pepper (optional for spice)

1 tablespoon chopped parsley (for garnish)

Instructions

Prepare the Beans

Rinse the beans and soak them overnight in cold water.

Drain and rinse, then place them in a pot with fresh water and a bay leaf.

Boil for about 45–60 minutes or until tender, then drain.

Prepare the Sauce

Heat oils in a pan over medium heat and sauté the onions until soft and translucent.

Add garlic and red bell pepper, cooking for another 3 minutes.

Stir in the paprika, black pepper, and flour (if using) and mix well.

Combine Everything

Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).

In a clay pot (or an ovenproof dish), mix the cooked beans with the sautéed mixture.

Season with salt, dried mint, and red pepper if using.

Bake

Pour in a little water or vegetable broth to keep the beans moist.

Bake uncovered for about 30 minutes until a golden crust forms on top.

Serve

Garnish with chopped parsley and serve warm with bread or a fresh salad.

Enjoy your homemade Tavče Gravče!
