Traditional Maldivian Mas Huni Recipe

Ingredients:

For the Mas Huni:

·         1 cup smoked tuna (or canned tuna in water/oil, drained)

·         1 cup freshly grated coconut (or desiccated coconut soaked in warm water)

·         1 small red onion, finely chopped

·         1–2 green or red chilies, finely chopped (adjust to taste)

·         Juice of 1 lime (or half a lemon)

·         Salt to taste

Optional Additions:

·         Curry leaves (a few, finely chopped)

·         1 small tomato, diced

·         A pinch of ground black pepper

For Serving:

·         Roshi (Maldivian flatbread) or chapati

·         Black tea or sweet milk tea

Instructions:

Prepare the Ingredients:

If using smoked tuna, flake it into small pieces using your fingers or a fork.

If using canned tuna, drain it well and then flake.

If using dry desiccated coconut, soak it in warm water for 5–10 minutes and then squeeze out excess water.

Mix the Mas Huni:

In a large mixing bowl:

Add the tuna, grated coconut, finely chopped onion, and chopped chili.

Season with salt and squeeze in the lime juice.

Mix everything thoroughly using your hands or a spoon until it becomes a well-blended mixture.

Taste and Adjust:

Add more lime juice or salt as needed.

If you want to soften the onion flavor, let the mixture sit for 5–10 minutes.

Serve:

Serve the Mas Huni with warm Roshi on the side.

Accompany with a hot cup of tea.

Tips & Notes:

Traditionally, Maldivian smoked tuna (Maldives fish) gives Mas Huni its signature flavor.

But canned tuna is a common substitute outside Maldives.

You can control the heat by adjusting the number of chilies.

Use your hands to mix for best texture and flavor distribution.
